THE ARTIST

JUSTIN BUA

Justin BUA brings classical figurative painting to the world of Hip-Hop, drawing on his upbringing in New York City’s graffiti and breakdancing culture. His iconic painting THE DJ has sold millions of prints worldwide, and his work has been featured at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Tucson Museum of Art. His visual storytelling extends to EA Sports’ NBA Street and NFL Street, MTV’s The Lyricist Lounge Show, and Oxygen’s Street Art Throwdown, which he developed, hosted and executive produced.

In 2022, BUA was selected among the first artists supported by Ripple’s $250 million Creator Fund. He also taught figure drawing at the University of Southern California for a decade and was appointed to the U.S. Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, helping shape which people and cultural achievements are honored on American postage stamps.

About Justin BUA

Painting the culture.

BUA paints Hip-Hop because it’s the world that raised him. He grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, went to school on 137th Street and Convent Avenue in Harlem, and later moved to East Flatbush, Brooklyn. As a B-boy and graffiti writer, the dancers, DJs, MCs were his peers, his neighbors and his heroes. Before BUA ever painted the culture, he lived it.

BUA’s life’s work is to document that culture in its full scope, the legends who changed the world and the everyday people who made it possible. He paints them with the weight and dignity once reserved for kings and royalty. These are the faces that belong in museums, in history books and in our collective memory. BUA’s paintings make sure they stay there.
